Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority was founded on Wednesday, January 15, 1908 on the campus of Howard University in Miner Hall. She is the first Greek-Letter Organization established by and for African-American college-trained women. The Sorority's mission encompasses two important premises: the importance of the individual and the strength of an organization of women of ability and courage.The formation of the Sorority stood as a catalyst for change and the empowerment of African American women to exercise their rights as citizens and engage in political, cultural, social, and economic affairs. Lead by the vision of our Guiding Light, Ethel Hedgeman Lyle, sixteen Howard University students formed a Sisterhood whose purpose is: To cultivate and encourage high scholastic and ethical standards, to promote unity and friendship amongst college women, to study and help alleviate problems concerning girls and women in order to improve their social stature, to maintain a progressive interest in college life, and to be of service to all mankind.
